Calendar: Some Dates To Remember
CRISIS IN JAPAN: On March 11, 2011, a powerful earthquake centered off of Northeastern Japan, caused serious damage to the mainland as it also generated a devastating tsunami. The loss of life is large, and the dislocation of victims whose homes have been destroyed has created the need for substantial amounts of aid and care for the survivors. The intensity of the crisis is compounded by the catastrophic failure of vital components of several nuclear reactors used to generate electricity. Meltdowns are in progress, and the threat of extremely dangerous radioactive conditions affecting the population is menacing not only the Japanese people, but possibly other peoples of Asia as well. The necessary evacuation of civilian populations out of endangered areas has added a great new strain on the emergency response apparatus, and makes the possibility of our assistance especially significant. At this time, the well-prepared and effective Japanese Red Cross Society and numerous government agencies and organizations are working valiantly to deal with the unprecedented situation, and are open to receiving financial donations to help fund their critical efforts. Many international aid agencies are available to assist, but among the most respected of these is the American Red Cross, which is currently collecting money to send to its Japanese counterpart. In the past, the Japanese people have contributed generously to the victims of disasters around the world (such as Katrina in America), and now it is our turn to help our good friends in their time of need. Contributions to the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Effort via the American Red Cross may be made via the Internet, telephone, or mail. For more information, please go to http://www.redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. - JRS, March 16, 2011.
SPECIAL EMERGENCY BULLETIN REGARDING HAITI: On January 12, 2010, around 5 PM, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, producing enormous devastation in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and elsewhere in this impoverished Caribbean nation. The still uncalculated death toll is likely to be huge, and the threat to those still living, who are in dire need of basic supplies such as food, water, and medicine in the midst of a severely compromised infrastructure, is absolutely pressing. Only a powerful international response can prevent this calamity from becoming far worse than it already is. Let's reach out to our brothers and sisters in Haiti, who are in need of both our prayers and material support, and give them all the help we can. There are many organizations which are available to channel our aid to those in need; one of the most reliable is the American Red Cross, whose international operations are well known and well regarded. Specify that the contribution you wish to make is for the Haitian Earthquake Relief effort. The American Red Cross may be reached at 1-800-733-2767, or www.redcross.org Thanks for your support. - JRS 01/13/10.
A Message From Rainsnow: In answer to some queries, I am still alive as of November 2009! The site is not showing many new additions at the moment, due to lots of off-line work going on, which will make its presence known later. Long-range plans are to return to a higher level of on-line activity and expansion by December 2010 - hopefully before! In the meantime, keep an eye out for the occasional addition! - JRS 11/30/09
KATRINA: Rainsnow.org sends its prayers to the people of New Orleans and other affected areas in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. The effects of this disaster will be felt far into the future, long after the initial emergency response. Please continue giving generously to the Red Cross, http://www.redcross.org , or to other involved charities, in the weeks and months to come. - JRS, September, 2005.
(September 2006 Update: "There's still a lot to do, and a long way to go before we can use the word 'recovery.' When you think of 'helping out', please keep New Orleans, and its diaspora, in your thoughts.")
(September 2007-08 Update: "Obviously, there are many calamities in this world of ours, and many urgent causes that require our attention. I do not mean to suggest that New Orleans and the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina come first; only to remind those who have a special place for them in their hearts, that the healing is incomplete, and the need for support continues.")
THE WAR IN IRAQ: Rainsnow.org, after an initial flurry of activity discouraging the initiation of the war in Iraq and a period of intense criticism of the actions of the Bush administration, maintains its post-2003 policy of focusing its limited resources on its fundamental goal of working on the deeper issues of our civilization, which will continue to generate mistakes of this nature until a true process of personal and social transformation has finally taken hold. It is this transformative process that lies at the heart of the Rainsnow Project.
"Life must be fought for on the surface, and in the depths..."
In the meantime, we urge everyone to pray for peace, and the real-world conditions which will facilitate peace; and for the safety of those we love and the safety of all innocents caught in the middle of the struggle. There are many organizations especially attentive and dedicated to the specifics of the war in Iraq, which have both the resources and emphasis which we lack to do effective nuts-and-bolts work for peace in this area. We urge those who wish to become more deeply involved to seek out these organizations and consider working with them. Although we are hopeful that the change of administration heralded by the momentous elections of November 2008 will help to remedy the problems associated with the war, to save lives, facilitate peace, and bring constructive hope and change to our country and the world, we urge the public to remain vigilant regarding the resolution of this conflict and the direction of our country. – JRS, Dec. 2008

Calendar: Some Dates To Remember
Some days have a significance that we recognize. Others do not. And yet, in every day, the powerful energy of personal and collective histories resides. It waits there to remind us, warn us, inspire us, enlighten us, move us, and nourish us with wealth beyond our own experience. Following, is a highly personal list of some of the days which I feel are most important to me, and to others, as times of reflection, celebration, or remembrance.
